Isn't part of the reason for wearing a Kara to show equality, you say it's like a wedding ring and sysmbolises you're marriage to god. But isn't it to show equality hence all Kara's should be metal and not gold or other material that may not be affordable to all?

Sat Siri Akaal Ji:

In Guruji's time, the kara was worn as a symbol of devotion to God & Guru. It was then typically of iron, not steel (which is merely refined iron). Iron was used because at the time it was affordable and accessible to all. Gold or silver were not.

There is nothing mandating that a kara cannot be gold or silver. I know some people who cannot wear the common kara because the steel is blended with nickel, and they are allergic to one or the other metal. Gold or silver (plated) karas represent one way around that.

Guru ang sang,
