Summary of Question:Amrit & Marriage
Category:Sikh Practices
Date Posted:Monday, 9/24/2001 9:03 AM MDT

Dear Khalsaji - WJKK WJKF - neither myself or my wife are Amritdharis, but we are both getting there (slowly) - I have read somewhere that if I take Amrit first, and she doesn't, we can no longer have sex, until she takes Amrit. Is this true ?? And is this why couples are encouraged to take Amrit together.

Thanks, WJKK WJKF.

Sat Siri Akaal. I think it's wonderful that both of you are working on getting to taking Amrit together; take whatever time you need to do it. I think it would be very supportive to your vows if you both take it together, but it is NOT a requirement. Then you are more inspired to practice paath together, Naam Simran together, etc. There is nothing in Gurbani or Rehit as given by 10th Guru that says married spouses cannot have sex unless they are both Amritdhari or both non-Amritdhari. It is NOT true.

Guru rakha,
-DKK
