Sat Siri AKaal. Many Sikh girls leave their hair down. It is your personal choice.
However, it is recommended to keep it braided/wrapped and up on the head. This has several advantages. It keeps it neat and tidy and out of the way, so to speak. It also has a subtle effect activating the higher conciousness because the hair sits on top of the solar centers of the head, activating the pineal gland, the home of the 10th gate (das dwaar). I have also found it effective in maintaining psychic boundaries where men are concerned -- it has made a difference in the level of respect with which I am treated when I am at work or out and about. For any female, these effects are magnified when you wrap a turban around your hair after putting it up, creating the effect of a crown. As a Princess (Kaur) of the Guru, this is appropriate.
