Hi,

I read your answers to girls who want to marry clean shaven sikhs only. I was glad to see that there were some girls who only want to marry true sikhs with turban and beard. However, my question is, how many real sikh girls are there left, girls who don't cut their hair or shave their legs, etc? I have ever only seen one sikh girl who doesn't shave her legs. Why do these girls do this? Why aren't they proud of the way they are? Thank you for your answer.

Sat Siri Akaal. I can think of many reasons why Sikh girls shave or cut their hair, but in the end, for you to know the answer you would have to ask the Sikh girls you know who shave/cut their hair WHY they do this.

Somehow they have probably absorbed from dominant culture wherever they live that they are 'more attractive' with shaved legs and cut hair. Young girls everywhere need to understand that beauty is, indeed, ONLY skin deep. Real beauty is the beauty of the spirit that shines through a person. Most young women are embarrassed by their bodies and embarrased to dress them for young men, BUT they do so anyway because of peer and cultural pressure. They have not learned to love who they are, and think if they LOOK a certain way they will be popular/loved, etc. It takes a strong young woman to say NO to this and live as Sikhs are taught to live. It also takes a strong Sikh to do this, not one who is uncertain of her faith and her place in that faith.
