I am amritdari and I got into sikhi like 2 years back. Now at times I feel like rebellin again. Sometimes I think that amrit is keeping me from doing the bad things. I think if I weren’t amritdari, I’d go out and buy a pack of smokes cuz now I am getn cravings for them. I know its bad and I shouldn’t be thinking like that, but its true. Its not that I want to break amrit, actually I can’t break amrit cause I do love my Guru with my heart. How do I stop myself from those cravings? And by the way, please don’t think that those cravings would be enough to get me to break amrit, cause they aren’t. And I would never wana betray my Guru at all. Please pray for me to God so that I don’t ever go astray from my real path. And how do I stop having those cravings for smoking????

(REPLY) Sat Nam. Congratulations on your determination and commitment! I know you will succeed. Cravings are a HABIT and habits are hard to change. The best way to deal with a bad habit is to substitute a good habit. You might try reaching for chewing gum, or a handful of raisins when you crave a cigarette! Two other tools you can use: First, and most powerful, pray to Guru Ram Das, Lord of Miracles, to free you from the cravings--- repeat the shabd Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru 11 times every day. (You can just say the words, if you can't sing them.) Second: use positive affirmation, write it down, post it on your mirrors, or slip the paper inside your desk, on which you've written something that tells you that you are absolutely free of all negative cravings and/or that you are perfectly content following all the code of living as Amritdhari. And finally, one little thought, "Whatever we give attention to, grows." So when you notice a craving, don't "Fight" - Don't give it importance, basically, ignore it, like an unwelcome intruder, and immediately do something else. You can say to yourself, "Hmmm that's interesting, but it's not ME!
and then move on! Don't let your mind rule you. That's why we meditate and Chant God's Name, so that we get rid of the negative patterns in our sub-conscious minds. Patience pays, you will succeed! Blessings, SP
