The name Singh has been used by Rajastanis for many years before Guru Gobind Singh ji told Sikhs (men) to put Singh as there last name..
The reason for this could be (just a theory) that Rajastanis where great fighters … so maybe guru ji wanted to show that Sikhs where just as power full and great fighters. After all Singh does mean Lion.
And lets not forget the fact that Guru ji wanted to show that all people where equal.
