Summary of Question:A Different Perspective On: Why A Sikh Should Marry Another Sikh
Category:Love & Marriage

The view is that a Sikh should marry another Sikh.

In my view perhaps we can look at it in another way rather than those who question why can't I marry someone of another religion or background etc and they then use the following statement to back up their statement:
'Sikhism believes that everyone is equal'

Absolutely it does correct. However perhaps we need to look at it from a different perspective and perhaps we can then begin to understand it.

To be of the believe you should marry another Sikh.
Look at it like this perhaps this is because we can then have some commonality and be of the belief that our partner is likely to have the same values that Sikhism teaches and in doing so the upbringing will be similar.
So based on this when a parent perhaps is of the belief you should marry another Sikh and they are perhaps against anything outside this then perhaps they are coming from this angle.

So you see this is not discrimination towards other religions or upbringings. You could actually say this is love for Sikhism and is a way to keep it alive through generations.

God Bless All

(REPLY) Sat Nam. I agree. One of the most important things parents can give children is a strong faith in God, and a firm establishment of the values that go along with their religious identity. Unless both mother and father share the same values and beliefs, it can be confusing to the child who learns primarily from the example set by the parents.
