Sats Sri Akal,

Hello, i have written in many times and asked many questions and am very pleased with the answers i have received.

I have another question.

Earlia today I had to go outside and move the car to allow another to pass and i didn't have on a turbun. I then slipped on a hat that was sitting on the siderail. I am not cropped and have a full head of hair. After there was a slight conflict between me and my mum. She said that it "is against our religeon to wear hats"???? is this true?

Please if you will answer this question although it is a strange one!

thank you,

Sats sri akal ji.

Sat Nam!!

It is true that traditionally Sikhs do not cover the top "gate" on their head with anything other than a turbin or head covering, like a scarf. Our turbin is our crown and is a symbol of that respect, dignity and grace, as given by Guru Gobind Singh. As a part of our Bana, it signifies that we are a person of God...and we are not afraid to "announce" ourselves or be recognized as such.

But, as a young person, you will have to decide for yourself what has meaning for you and how traditional you want to live. Guru Nanak also warned us not to be fanatics and follow out of ritual. Explore what your turbin means for you. Do you feel it is your crown, which is an honor to wear? Are you proud to signify yourself as a child of the Guru. Think about it. What ever you decide, do it with love, devotion and meaning.
In His Name, GTKK
