Sat Nam.

Six weeks or so ago, after doing some reading and study of gurbani and religious texts, I decided to start covering head. Mostly with scarves and kerchiefs, and my co-workers are starting to grumble. They're forbidden to wear such things, and while the griping is not at me (thankfully they have respect for my beliefs) it does create tension.

I work for a large financial services company, and got word today that they want to see me for an interview for a position in another division of the company. One where I don't have to shlep around a headset, and in a place a little more professional than my present division. It's clearly in the employee manual "no scarve, hats etc" though they make exception for me because I'm following religious teaching. Have any of you ever been in a spot where you've had to go on an interview in a turban or chunnee--how do you explain to the recruiter or interviewer what's going on without sounding like you're apologising for it?

And how to look professional? Lately I've been wrapping the ends of a chunnee around my braid, coiling it all up and tying it into a big bun of hair and cloth. Do you figure this is correct for an interview in a more professional end of the company? (also, is this correct in terms of Sikh practice? I'd try one of my husband's turbans, but I have little experience there and don't want to come off looking sloppy.)

My interview is the day after Memorial Day, and I want to be both religiously and professionally proper. I'm new to this, and couldn't wrap a little bitty keski to save my skin! Suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Blessed be,
Elizabeth

I'm sorry Elizabeth, it looks like no one responded to you before your interview. I hope it went alright. I suggest that you learn how to tie a woman's turbin. I have worn one for many years and my turbin is very neat and professional. There is nothing wrong with explaining your turbin to co-workers and employers. Depending upon your manner, it is not an appology. You are educating them. They will appreciate your open and direct communication. Explain the benefits, etc. Be upbeat and even humorous. Good luck.
