Summary of Question:Should We Know The Meaning Of The Words In Banis When Reading Them

hi,

I have been to Gurudwaras, where they say that you should read Bani as much as possible. But isnt it necessary to know the meaning of the Words while one read the Bani. How can one establish love for the Almighty if he/she doesnt know what is he/she singing in praise of Him?

thanks

(REPLY) Yes, and no. There is an inherent power in the very syllables of the banis as we speak them, we are recreating that divine state of consciousness in which our Gurus uttered them, and so it isn't "necessary" to know the meaning. However, it will greatly enhance and improve the effect if we know the meaning, so ideally, we do understand what they mean. So, yes, you're right we will get more out of them if we understand the meaning. There are English translations available of the banis, and the entire Siri Guru Granth Sahib right here on the SikhNet website. Perhaps your question will inspire readers to explore! Blessings, SP
