Summary of Question:Inter Caste Marriage- Can I Marry Someone Who Is Not A Sikh
Category:Love & Marriage

SSA,

I am sikh but is it wrong to fall in love with someone who is not a sikh. Gurunanak always preached love and that God is one. Than why is it not fine if I want to marry someone I love, who is not a sikh.

Regards.

Dear Blessed,

There is no specific instruction anywhere in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib that you cannot marry a person who is not a Sikh. So - if you love someone and you see the values of a Sikh in them, then by all means - love them. That being said - the reason people marry into their own faith is because, simply, as you raise children, as you stay married - having a commonality of faith, especially in trying times, is a significant asset in managing to go through it successfully. Also, it is well recognized that one of the reasons marriages fail is due to the differences in faith. Finally, as strange as it may sound, please understand that when you commit to a marriage with somebody outside your faith, one of the questions - will my children be Sikhs? - has to be addressed up front. As in any relationship, before you take any significant steps, it is of great help to address the issues of differences and potential solutions in advance to avoid all the failures.

May you love with Guru's grace.
