I am a 19 year old sikh. One of the thing that is bothering me is that is it OK to tie the beard. My dad ties his beard every morning and now my younger brother (17) has also started tying. Every time i ask this question to my parents they say it is your own wish to tie it or not. But i am not satisfied. Our ten gurus never tied their beard. no sikh ruler tied his beard. so since when has this tradition started?
and does this(tying of beard) go with the sikh principals? if not why. i have searched other posts too but i am not satisfied with the answers. so why or why not should we tie our beard.

Yes, it's OK. There are practical reasons to tie a beard. What if you were a mechanic on a car? You wouldn't want it all messed up in a greasy engine. Tying your beard is a personal choice. It is not cutting the beard, nor is it a permanent alteration. As you get older, you have to be clear in yourself your motives and your own relationship to Guru and to Sikhi.
