Dear sikhnet,

I would first like to congratultate you on this wonderful site. I am a sikh even though most people disagree, i cut my hair,(this is my parents' wish, not mine)i've shave, i don't wear most of the 5 k's except the kara.

I was just wondering how i could convince my parents to let me keep kesh, and go to the gurduwara more often, etc...

And also, could you give me a quick description of Kabir,

Thank you
Kulbir Gill

Sat siri akaal. Just do it. Your relationship to Guru and Sikhi is YOURS, not your parents. It is most un-Sikh to ask one's own children to forgo the gifts of Guru, the 5 Ks. It is most un-Sikh to call yourself Sikh and insist to others that they not be fully Sikh by keeping 5 Ks. How does anyone know you are Sikh if you don't look it? What are you or your parents trying to hide?????

So, if this is something you really want, then I recommend you do it. There is so much information on this site (see hair, turban categories) or search "rehit" and you will get a lot of information. go to http://www.sikhseek.com to see other Sikh-related Web sites.

But in the end, there is no magic pill. Your parents have made it their issue, when it should not be an issue at all.

Kabir was a great saint who wrote & lived about 50 years before Guru Nanak. He was born a Muslim orphan but raised in the Hindu tradition. His writings have been honored by people of several paths: Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs. His writings were included in Guru Granth Sahib by Guru Arjan Dev, because Kabir's message was the same of that of Nanak.

Guru ang sang,
-DKK
