Sat Siri AKaal. I'm a western woman who adopted Sikhi and turbans 13 years ago. Some people think I'm weird, some think I'm Muslim, some think I'm Coptic from East africa! So what. People look at anyone who appears different from THEIR idea of the norm. Sadly, since 9/11 people also think we hate America and that ANYONE wearing a turban is a Muslim fanatic. Two things I suggest you do. Read elsewhere on this Sikhnet site about the many things Sikhs are doing around the country to inform people WHO we are and what we believe. You are NOT alone. Second, get yourself a cool U.S. flag pin and wear it all the time. People don't always KNOW that we are American since we look different, so show it in your dress and certainly in your actions. You could also volunteer in some local groups in your community that sponsor patriotic events on U.S. holidays. Volunteer yourself in the community in free kitchens, senior centers or other places to show you are American. Guru ang sang,
