Sat Nam! Please do not misunderstand. It is not simply a symbol. It is a technology. Just as all the 5 kakkhar are.
It is a matter of having the steel in the body's electromagnetic field. If you cannot wear iron or steel next to your skin, let me suggest that you wear a silver kara and keep your steel kirpan under your jacket, close to your body, but not against your skin. Alternatively, you could keep it in a pocket if necessary. You must certainly do what works for you.
But please do understand that every one of the 5 K's is based not simply on symbology, but on a very refined technology of human physiology and consciousness. Each one has a very precise effect.
