Covering your head is a spiritual practice that has a number of perspectives to consider.

The top of your head is the tenth gate or the crown chakra. It is normally covered by hairs or antenna that protect the top of the head from sun and exposure as well as channelize sun and vitamin D energy.

A yogi or a Sikh that does not cut their hairs, will make a coil of these hairs and place them on top of their tenth gate. This will channelize their radiant energy and help them retain a spiritual focus.

The Sikh Guru's taught us to take the next step: Put a turban on the head and the coiled uncut hairs. The turban is not a joke. There are 26 parts of the brain. When you tie up your hair and set the turban on it, it pulls all the parts of your brain together. You feel a clarity and a readiness for the day and for what may come to you from the Unknown.

God is the Unknown. God is not just a mystery, God is a mastery. Living with an awareness of your God within you and the God outside of you(in all) is an attitude. Covering your head is an action with the attitude that there is something greater than you know. Your willingness to stand under that greatness of God is expressed by taking the highest most visable part of you and declaring it as a place that belongs to the Creator.

Our turban is our declaration that this head, this mind is dedicated to our Creator. The turban reminds us becasue we can feel it tight on our head pulling all our brain points together. The turban reminds others because they see that we are different. The Turban becomes a flag (nishan sahib) of our consciousness as well as our crown of spiritual royalty.

Covering your head is an action of declaring your humility or surrender to God. Wearing a turban over uncut hair is a technology of consciousness that can give you the experience of God. This experience is for the Khalsa, and in Khalsa there is no gender....men and women have the benefit to experience this equally.
