why is the golden temple at amristar a place of pilgrimage?

Sat Siri Akaal. Because of its tremendous healing powers, among other things. There are several shabds by 4th and 5th Guru that tell us why we should journey there. "Dithai sabhai taav" shabd for one; "santo Ram Das sarovar neeka" is another. Please go to http://www.sikhseek.com and search "Golden Temple" or "Harimandir Sahib" and get the full story on how this temple and nectar tank came to be. It is the Mother Temple of all Sikhs. Ask anyone who has made a special effort to get there and ask them how they felt after being there, and how their lives changed (for the better) because of it.

While Siri Guru tells us that pilgrimages are NO substitute for daily bani and simran, pilgrimages are still elevating and can do wonders for restoring one's faith and spiritual health.
