Summary of Question:Covering Of Nitnem
Category:Gurbani
Date Posted:Tuesday, 3/05/2002 8:12 PM MST

First of all I would like to thank you for creating such an atmosphere that a youth like me, may feel comfortable asking any question to the willing and able staff of your site. My question was about the covering of my gutka or nitnem. I have seen a lot of ways people have chosen to cover the gutka. Mostly, people cover it with a simple cloth of some sort, however, I noticed that certain people tie the knot on the top of the gutka a certain way. I was wondering, was all of this just in respect, or is there more behind where you tie the knot and how you cover the gutka? Sorry if this question has been answered before, I did search as much as could but to no avail. Thank you for your time.

Sat Siri AKaal. Since gutka has Gurbani, it is important to treat it respectfully. Covers and cloths that tie around it completely (especially when it is carried around in one's personal belongings) are important to keeping it whole and preserving it, and are also a sign of respect for the Gurbani they contain. That said, I have never heard of any one particular way to tie the cloth around it or to knot the cloth. Where the knot goes may be a function of how the gutka is stored (on a shelf, for example).
If there is someone out there who has heard otherwise, please let us know.
Guru rakha,
