Summary of Question:Meditation - Effects On Body
Category:Meditation
Date Posted:Saturday, 10/12/2002 8:55 PM MDT

Thank you for your prompt reply to my other question.

1) Could you please explain ALL of the physiological changes that my body
will go through as I progress in my study/practice of meditation?
2) Also, why do Amritdhari Sikhs do simran with 'Wahe Guru' and why do
non-Amritdhari Sikhs do simran with 'Sat Nam'? What are the different
effects?

Although I feel I have gained a fair bit of 'book learning' about meditation
from the net, sometimes it is very difficult to find answers to specific
questions. I appreciate you taking time to answer these. thank you.

Sundeep Gill.

Sat Siri Akal.

Changes that you will go through - physcially, mentally, emotionally - have to do with your own karma and not any set system of how the body progresses. What's important is that, as you meditate, you will begin to get much more in touch with the energy of your own body, mind and spirit, and as you pay attention to that, you will know what you need. Think of it this way. Given the right conditions of water, soil and sunlight, a flower will naturally bloom. So your soul will naturally bloom under the power of Gurbani and meditation - but each soul blooms in a unique way. Focus on grounding yourself in your own experience of meditation and watching your spirit unfold. The stages are not an intellectual process, but an experiential one.

As for Simran - any Sikh can do Simran with any words from the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. Ek Ong Kaar Sat Gur Prasaad, or Har, Har Har. Non-Amritdhari Sikhs can also meditate on Wahe Guru, as well. What's important isn't the words you chant so much as the consciousness with which you chant them. Are you relaxed, one-pointed, quiet within yourself? Simran is about being in a meditative state - using the breath to conquer one's own mind. If you chant senselessly - not paying attention - mind wandering everywhere - that's not Simran. Make yourself quiet within and then meditate on whatever words of the Guru you choose. This is an excellent way to do Simran.

All love to you.
