Sat Nam.

My husband and I work with local cat shelters who are in financial holes right now because people are *not* fixing their pets and are letting them roam about.

The animals were given to us for companionship and help. The dog was domesticated to guard property and herd animals; and neither God nor man has ever created a better mousetrap than a cat. They ask nothing but food, drink and good love and care. We two-legged people are supposed to be the responsible ones, but check out the newspapers...you read horror stories almost daily of crazy "cat collectors," people who beat the daylights out of pit-bulls or rotts to make them meaner, and churn out high-ticket pure-breeds in unhealthy "puppy mills." Not to mention those who, through pure irresponsibility or lack of heart, just turn the animals out when the novelty wears off, figuring they'll have the instinct to survive out in the wild. Any shelter worker will tell you it only goes so far--a cat can catch all the mice it wants but is still susceptible to feline leukemia or FIV (cat AIDS.)

They were given to us by a creator who knows well enough that we need them. The planet needs its animals to keep the ecosystem in check. But please, if you're going to own a pet, do right by it and control the population by spaying or neutering! You will have healthier pets, and won't be contributing to the problems caused by a wild animal population already out of balance.

Blessed be,

Elizabeth
