You will often see the moderators mention reciting a shabd 11 times and the reason for this links back to the Kundalini Yoga understanding of what we are as human beings. Many of us in the West have come to the Sikh path through the doorway of Kundalini Yoga and we often brings those tools with us along the way. In Kundalini Yoga, the human being is explained as having 11 bodies - not just the physical body - but other bodies, as well. The 11 bodies are: the soul, the negative mind, the positive mind, the neutral mind, the physical body, the intuitive body, the aura, the pranic body, the subtle body, the radiant body and the perfected body - which is when all the previous bodies are working in harmony together. This is a system for describing the human experience - captuaring physical, mental, energetic and spiritual components. When we recite a shabd 11 times, what we are doing is balancing each of those bodies per recitation of the shabd. So the first recitation balances the soul body, the second balances the negative mind, etc. and so on.
This is a system with us and we fully acknowledge the power of the Guru to come through no matter how many times the shabd is recited. But in seeing ourselves as having 11 bodies and reciting the shabd once for each of those bodies - it really does help a person to feel more balanced and integrated on every level.
I hope this answers your questions.
All love.
