Category:Gurdwara
Date Posted:Saturday, 6/23/2001 4:59 PM MDT

Hello,

I was wondering that since caste shouldnt matter to anyone in the sikh religion, well who then decided to build Gurdwara for different castes??

I searched through your questions to see if there was one like mine, but i couldnt find one that answered my particular question.

Thank you in advance.

Dear One:
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

The simple answer to your question is: people who call themselves Sikh and insist on observing caste built gurdwaras oriented to caste. I do not know of which gurdwaras you speak. But throughout Sikh history people have consistently IGNORED Guruji and OBSERVED caste. My own feeling is that this happens because caste is SO pervasive in India and Indian communities outside of India, it seems too few really try to fight it or feel they can fight it.

Though you said your question was not found on this site, the answer to caste questions on this Forum should be the same: Sikhs do not observe caste. We are Singhs and Kaurs of the Guru, Khalsa as one in Guru's eyes. Therefore it is irrelevant!

It is WRONG and NOT Sikh to build a gurdwara for one or another caste. We all come from One Creator, period. Sikhs who observe caste set themselves above or below other people. This is the same as criticizing the One Creator who made us, and the same as telling Him someone cannot worship in a gurdwara because of their caste. !?!?!?

Guru rakha,
