Amritdharis are supposed to have the head covered when in public. Since God is everywhere, if we wear turbans out of respect for God and Guru we could never remove it even to wash our hair! There are reasons for this that have to do with your own consciousness and how others see you.
For example, the hair is sexually attractive. One of the many reasons for covering the hair is to keep from stimulating the lower nature of others. It's for you to keep yourself pure. As always, the rules are for general guidelines and not to make fanatics of people.
