Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Whheguru ji ke Fathe,

I would like to ask you about a new issue i have been hearing about in the past few months. Many people are saying that you shouldn't drink soft drinks, coffe,or eat chocolate because it contains caffeine which is a drug!?!? Some people don't even drink Cha because of this!
I haven't been agreeing with this but I would like to know your opinion.

Guru's rehit proscribes use of drugs and this goes to the INTENT to become intoxicated. Bhang, Alcohol, etc. are taken with an intent to become intoxicated. I doubt that anyone takes chai with the intent to become intoxicated. It merely produces temporary increased alertness. In Chinese, there is only one word that means both "food" and "drug". The understanding is that everything we take into our bodies is a food-drug. Everything affects our body and our consciousness. It is the desire to be intoxicated, i.e., the attachment to substances that produce intoxication - that occupies our minds instead of the love of God and Guru. That is what Guruji proscribes.
