Summary of Question:Hindu Gurus Vs. Sikh Gurus
Category:General Q's from Non-Sikhs

I am wondering what the Sikh view is of Hindu gurus who claim to have realized God (such as the female guru Ammachi). Do Sikhs believe that there have only been ten gurus in the history of mankind? It is my understanding that the goal of life according to Sikhism is to attain union with God. If one were to attain this union in their present lifetime, would such a person be considered a Satguru?

Please forgive me for any offenses I may cause as a result of my ignorance.

Sincerely,

Nischala

Sat Siri Akaal. Sikhs believe in 11 Gurus: 10 physical Gurus and the current Guru known as Siri Guru Granth Sahib. I do not believe Sikhs deny the existence of other satgurus from other faiths. The Buddha and Jesus the Christ were also sat gurus, technically speaking! While practically speaking there are sat gurus in EVERY path (not just Hindu or Sikh), they are not always recognized as such. It is correct that one who has attained that union with Waheguru is, technically, a sat guru. Hope this helps,
guru ang sang,
