Kirtan is the essence of our spiritual practice. Kirtan is the singing of the Shabd. The shabd is the sound current when recited or sung, will cut the ego, and open up the inner awareness of God consciousness. We sinng kirtan in the presence of the Guru and the Sadh Sangat. It is a very powerful way of having an experience of the Shabd. One does not need to understand the meaning of the Gurbani in order to get the benefit of the Shabd.

In addition, all the Shabds in Siri Guru Granth Sahib have been assigned a raag. Raag scales are very powerful musical forms of notes that when applied to the singing of a Shabd increases the power of penetraton of the Shabd.
