THE KIRPAN. The Kirpan is of course one of the 5 K's. And Do you think that people kind of take advantage of it. There was this incident at the airport, An Amritdari was walking through the lil metal detector thing and the thing beeped, you know. And they found this kirpan on him. And he kept tellin him its a religious thing. BUT! What makes them think he was lieing? I'll tell you, I am not an amritdari, therfore i dont wear my 5 k's and if I walked into the airport and went through the thingy and they found a kirpan on me, my defense would be I am a sikh. But i am not an amritdari so...

...so why do i wear a kirpan specifically to the airport. No one knows but me. I can ashamefully admit that there are some crazy people out there and some of them are Sikhs. All I am asking is, do people take advantage of being a Sikh, by using thier Kirpan?

Dear Daisy,

I just love your letters they are great. Not being an Amritdhari doesnt mean that you dont wear a Kirpan. There are many people who are aspiring to become Amritdharis and there are many people who wear the 5 k's because of their desire to. The Kirpan is the Symbol that represents that we are always willing to defend the weak and stand up for righteousness and liberty. If any one abuses that pricipal he will not only be abusing himself and his own self respect but also that of the Kirpan. Guru Gobind Singh Ji once said that the Sword is God and it should be treated that way. so the answer to your question is if they use it the way it is supposed to be used then they are honoring all of us. If they use it in a wrong way then they are Dis - Honoring all of us their religion and the Guru's. I know for a fact that there are many people who have used the Kirpan in a way that was not right. The thing that bothers me is why was tyhis man in the Airport keeping the Kirpan under his clothing. If you dont want to make trouble you should keep it out and in the open. I hope this has answered your question. Thank you very much
