Sat nam. As I understand it, the day was divided into 8 watches, with each watch or segment being special or particular to certain activities. In simple terms, it was a way of keeping time. Figure each watch in today's terms as 3 hours. In Gurbani, it was a way of saying that anytime, day or night, one can and should chant the naam.
