Judy Chu of California Legislature Writes to Miramax-Still no Response from Weinstein

On April 15th, Dr. Judy Chu, 49th Assembly District of the California Legislature sent a letter on behalf of the Sikh community to Harvey Weinstein of Miramax about the film Dysfunktional Family. Chu is the Chair of the California State Assembly Select Committee on Hate Crimes.

In the letter, she wrote, "While I acknowledge and advocate for freedom of artistic expression, I am disappointed and outraged by the moral irresponsibility demonstrated by Miramax Films and other decision makers in the Dysfunktional Family film project."

Chu went on to suggest actions Miramax could take to correct the film, including adding a 30-second trailer to the beginning of the film promoting tolerance. (The full text of the letter is below.)

Miramax has still refused to issue an official statement about the Sikh community's concerns with the film. Dysfunktional Family did not do well at the box office and, within a few weeks of opening, the film closed in several major cities.

Representatives from different Sikh organizations, including Sikh Coalition, SMART, SikhPoint and SikhNet, are continuing to work to bring Miramax to the negotiating table in order to request that changes be made to the film before it is released on DVD and video.
