John,
Sat Siri Akaal. Please have a Gursikh show you the particulars. I believe you are in Canada(?) and there are many Sikhs and Gurdwaras in Canada. Non-Sikhs are welcome to attend Sikh Gurdwaras. Someone will be curious and come up and ask you how you are there. It will all flow from there, I speak from experience.

Care of SGGS is not easily described online. Attend a local gurdwara and ask the gianis there to show you. (Someone who speaks English will help you if the gianis do not speak English.) The SGGS is usually wrapped in 2-5 white squares of pure, clean sheeting or other cotton, then the ramallah is laid over the top, but not wrapped round SGGS. This is for when SGGS is in sukhasan, and not open. The white squares are removed when Guru is in prakash for worship and reading. The pretty ramallahs cover it except when being read from. There is a whole set up that a Gursikh will show you. This means a lot to you, I know. It is hard to be Sikh without sangat (congregation) so use this issue as your introductory point. Guru ang sang,
-DKK
