I have heard that Sikhism prohibits tattoos. However, I know quite a few Sikh youths who have a khanda tattoo on there arm. So even though people get this to show there Sikh pride are they still doing something wrong?

Just remember Sukhmeet Singh Ji tattoos are permanent and you will have to live with it for the rest of your life. There are ways of removing them these days, but those methods still leave a scar. Think about it first and be sure!
