My brother-in-law who is also an Amritdhari; in his fifties got laid off for an year. During that time, he bagan sehaj paath & did as much paath as he could. He never complained, in fact welcomed the guests who came to live with them for months (w/o knowledge that their hand was so tight at the time).
After one year he got much better job than the one from where he was laid off. His son who was not serious about graduating from college; chose a serious profession for himself and succeeded that with flying colors. I guess what he could not teach his son with words in years, his laying off taught his son in one year or may be in few months. Guru Arjan Dev Ji says in "So Dar" (Rehraas Sahib) on Ang 10 in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji -
"kaahae rae man chithavehi oudham jaa aahar har jeeo pariaa ||
sail pathhar mehi ja(n)th oupaaeae thaa kaa rijak aagai kar dhhariaa ||1||"
Why, O mind, do you plot and plan, when the Dear Lord Himself provides for your care?
From rocks and stones He created living beings; He places their nourishment before them. ||1||
