Summary of Question:Taking Amrit
Category:General Sikhism
Date Posted:Monday, 3/18/2002 4:39 AM MDT

I am a sikh male who has a yearning to take amrit. I have been a strict vegetarian for some eight years, and I have no plans to ever eat meat or associated products. I do not smoke nor do I take alcohol or drugs. I have grown my kesh and beard and wear a turban.

The question is when I take amrit, I am under the belief that I am not allowed to be without any one of the five Ks - is that correct.

I am curious because I have started to wear a minature 'kirpan & Khanda' around my neck suspended by a piece of black cord, and I have started to wear a 'kangha' in my kesh, but the kangha doesnt fix/grip fully so I tie it in with a piece of cord. I hope I am not doing anything that I shouldn't, it's just there is no-one else I can talk to.

Also I have heard some people say that at bedtime, a sikh is to remove the kangha a comb the kesh. My question is do you re- fix the kangha in or can you sleep with your kesh open/un-tied.

And lastly does the kachera have to be made from white cloth or can a person wear one in a different colour.

Thankyou for your co-operation. My concerns are genuine and I hope you reply.

Satsriakhal...

Greetings and blessings to you in the Name of God and Guru.

You are great and you ARE doing so well.

The life of an Amritdhari Sikh is one of consciousness with discipline. The practices are to support your daily elevation. Think that your practice is to bring grace and consciousness to your life......rather than fanaticism.

At night you must comb your hair down. Braid your hair into a single braid. This will relax you and will balance you and keep your hairs healthy as you recharge the attenna of the kesh by combing them. Keep you kanga and kirpan in a special place so they are ready for you when you comb your hair in the morning. The tie you described is a perfect way to hold these items in the hair during the day.

When you take Amrit, you must maintain your 5 k's on a daily basis. Understand that there are times when you canot wear your kirpan, such as on an airplane. Just relax into an attitude of systematic observance and do the best you can. It is not a question of 'not being alllowed'.

Ther is no color specified for katchera. White is normal for katchera's.

Wahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh
