On Diwali, Sikhs remember the Victory of Guru Hargobind over the King. The King allowed Guru Hargobind his freedom along with, as many Maharaja's and princes that were also imprisoned in the Gwalior fort, that could hold onto the Guru's Chola. Guru Hargobind had a special chola made with long draping side that every single one of the princes and maharaja's could hold and leave the fort together.
The observence has been adopted at the Harimander Sahib, Golden Temple, in Amritsar. There is no other reason than the release of Guru Hargobind coincided with Diwali.
