sat sri akal

i have a sikh background and have a strong desire to be a gursikh.but the problem is that i donot want to do it under compulsion. i wish to practice it so that it slowly dissolve in my blood.how to do that? plz help me.

(REPLY) Sat Nam. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "under compulsion." Guru Nanak taught that Truth is great, but greater still is truthful living. So I suppose the answer to your question about how to live, is simply to live righteously, trying to emulate the virtues of the Panj Piaray, starting with Kindness! Reciting Japji Sahib first thing in the morning is the key to open the door to your understanding of your own soul. Certainly as a Gursikh you's read all the banis. Guru Ram Das said, "He who considers himself to be a disciple of the True Guru should rise before the coming of the light and contemplate the Name. During the early hours of the morning he should rise and bathe, cleansing his soul in a tank of nectar, while he repeats the Name the Guru has spoken to him. By this procedure, he truly washes away the sins of his soul. Then with the arrival of the dawn he should sing the hymns of praise, taught him by the Guru..." etc. Which sounds to me like doing a daily sadhana, meditating, chanting, reciting of the banis, and then as a Gursikh, going out and earning your living righteously, so you'll have enought to give to those in need. (Or finishing your education, obviously) If you will look on the homepage of SikhNet and go to the link for the basic Sikh Dharma principles, you can then see how much, and which of those you want to apply in your day to day living. It's all between you and God and Guru. I hope that whatever you do, it is out of devotion, but also, doing is believing, and until you really practice something on a regular basis, you won't know how effective and meaningful it really is. (Takes 40 days to establish a habit.) Blessings, SP
