In the times of the Guru's, it happened that a father would gift his daughter to the Guru. Or, the daughter would say that she had a dream that she became the wife of the Guru. This was taken as a sign that she should marry only the Guru. These women were given to the care and protection of the Guru as a spiritual consort, not always as a fulfledged wife.
In the case of guru Gobind Singh, we know that Mata Ajit KAur was the mother of the Sahibzadas. Mata Sahib Kaur was a spiritual consort in that she had no physical relationship with the Guru. Rather, she became the 'Mother of the Khalsa'.
