Guru Fateh

Hats off to everyone for enlightening today's Sikh youth!

my question is simple...although i am a sehajdhari sikh, i know that amritdhari sikhs (or any sikh for that matter) are not allowed to eat meat (including eggs and fish)...i myself refrain from certain ice creams, cakes and even biscuits and cookies that contain even a bit of eggs in them...all i wanted to know is that if an amritdhari eats certain foods that contain egg in some quantities in it, does one have to re-take amrit???...say for example these ice-creams/cakes/cookies or so, some of them do contain a minute quantity of eggs, so what is to be done if one consumes it???

thank you

Guru Rakha

Sat Siri Akal.

The Gurus taught us that being fanatical about ritual actually can block the spiritual experience, so we have to give ourselves a little bit of room for what we face in modern life. Cakes made without eggs are difficult to come by -so it's up the consciousness of the person whether to avoid cake completely, or to have a pure intention about the fact that the cake was made with an egg. There's no real need to take Amrit again over something like this. A little bit of flexibility is necessary in nature. Now, if one were to go out and start eating potato and egg tacos every morning - then that would constitute a breach of vows and re-taking Amrit would be appropriate, as soon as the person was willing to give up the egg tacos.

Hope this helps.

All love,

GPK
