I honestly dont think that guru cares if we speak punjabi, hindi, english, aribic, bla bla bla, but it IS good to kno how to write and read punjabi, because gurumukhi is based right off of punjabi. I agree you should be able to read your patt and the siri guru granth sahib. I can read and write punajbi fluently, but at home, i use hindi. I dont see any problem with this, and i dont take any1's attitude at gurudwara when some aunty ji tells me to say punjabi instead of hindi. The panj pyaray themselves were from different parts of india, and with their families would definatly not speek punjabi if they were not comfortable. Where has this idea of only saying punjabi come from? Is it in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib? or is it a man made thing because gurumukhi is based on punjabi?
- i dont mean to affend anyone, just tell me your opinion and your answers to my questions

Sat Sri Akal,
It really does not matter what you speak. However, it is necessary for every Sikh to know how to read and understand Punjabi/Gurmukhi as that is the language of the Guru. True, some people will say that the Sri Guru Granth Sahib can now be read in English, however, the full effect of what is written cannot be translated. Thus, Punjabi is necessary for every Sikh to know.
Only the people who keep saying that you must only speak Punjabi know why they keep saying it... why don't you ask them?
Gur Fateh,
