GURDWARA CEREMONY
The usual sequence of events in Gurdwara is as follows:
- " Gurbani Kirtan—the singing of Shabads and inspirational songs
- " Katha: an instructional or inspirational talk illuminating the Guru’s Teachings. (optional)
- " Honoring of individuals with siropa. (optional)
- " Song of the Khalsa
- " Anand Sahib—first five Pauris and Slok of Japji.
- " The Sangat stands and recites together from Sukhmani Sahib, "Too Thaakur tum peh Ardas . . . "
- " Ardas, the traditional Sikh Prayer is offered. (If a ngara drum is available, it can be played everytime the sangat utters, Wahe Guru!)
- " The Sangat bows, then stands again to recite the Words of Guru Gobind Singh, "Aagee-aa bha-ee akaal kee "
- " The person reciting the Ardas makes the call: "Bolay so nihaal." The sangat responds: "Sat Siree Akaal."
- " The Sangat then bows and sits, and the Granthi, sitting behind the Guru, will open and read the Hukam, the Guru’s message to the Sangat
- " If the Hukam is read in Gurmukhi, a translation in English (or the local language) is ideally read immediately thereafter.
- " Explanation of Hukam. (optional)
- " The Sangat then sings, "Sabh sikhan ko hukam hai . . . guru maanee-o granth."
- " Guruparshad is distributed to all members of the Sangat (napkins may be distributed at this time).
- " Announcements may be made at this time.
- " Guru ka Lungar is then offered and shared.
